New Planning Regulations Ireland 2026

Is My Attic Conversion Exempt Under The New Planning Regulations?

New Attic Conversion Planning Exemptions Ireland 2026 — What Homeowners Need To Know

Planning & Development Act 2024

What Does This Mean For Homeowners?

The Government has announced proposed changes to Ireland’s exempted development regulations.

These proposals are intended to make it easier for homeowners to adapt their homes without the need for a full planning application.

Historically, most attic conversions have already been exempt from planning permission where:

The works are largely internal

The roof structure is not significantly altered

The ridge height is not raised

Rooflights are positioned appropriately

The attic remains ancillary to the house

The proposed regulations may significantly expand what can be carried out under exempted development, particularly for dormer attic conversions.
